Hair Loss
Hair loss is the major issue these days and a hair replacement system is the way out. Hair loss can occur due to several physiological and pathological phenomenon. For example, some diseases like Androgenetic Alopecia, Telogen Effluvium, Anagen Effluvium, Alopecia Areata, Traction Alopecia, Trichotillomania can cause sudden hair loss early on in life. On the other hand, hair fall can occur due to side effects of certain medications like chemotherapy drugs.
Physiological hair fall is caused by the normal aging process in both men and women. However, the pattern and the age at which it starts occurring differs in both genders. According to the American Hair Loss Association, by the age of 40, 40% of women have visible hair loss. On the other hand, by 50, approximately 85% of men have significantly thinning hair.
Most clients that opt for hair replacement systems tend to be men experiencing male patterned baldness. However, you must know that anyone experiencing any baldness or hair loss can use a hair replacement system, no matter the cause.
Hair Replacement System
Have you been noticing an increase in hair fall lately? Has your hair been thinning out? Or has your hairline moved back? It looks like you are in need of a hair replacement system. Don’t worry. This is all part of the natural process of aging. Such changes have nothing to do with your diet and general health but are physiological changes that occur over time.
A hair replacement system is simply defined as a system that replaces missing hair. It is a non-surgical procedure; therefore, it produces no side effects or risks. It works by attaching artificial hair to hair that is left behind.
In both men and women, hair fall follows a certain pattern. However, even in the final stages of hair loss, the pattern usually leaves many of the existing hair population behind. Therefore, the hair replacement system latches on to this pre-existing hair and covers bald patches.
Hair System Base and Materials
The base of the hair system is the substance upon which the artificial hair is attached. This can be done by either injecting or tying. T the most common material used nowadays include meshes, polymers, or a mixture of both.
Mesh fabrics are usually made of cloth-like materials that are woven out of nylon or polyester. This ends up being the foundation of a fine hairline in a good hairpiece. However, sometimes they can also be used throughout the hairpiece, but it is not suitable for long-term use due to its fragility.
Mesh fabrics are lightweight and cool, which makes them comfortable to wear. They also give a very natural look. But they are usually more delicate, and as a result, they react with body secretion like sweat. Therefore, they must be replaced frequently, which makes it an expensive choice.
Polymers are used to make more durable systems; therefore, they are used in pieces that need to be used for prolonged periods. These pieces are woven from silicone or polyurethane. Such materials give a scalp-like appearance. Polymer pieces are relatively cheaper and even more durable than mesh pieces. Additionally, they are easily attachable too.
However, because of the nature of polymer materials, these pieces tend to become uncomfortable when worn for a long time. They might give off a prosthetic look unless the hairline is made of other materials such as lace. This type of piece is called skin with a laced front.
The Hair Used in a Hairpiece
The second part of the hair replacement system consists of the hair. Again, the best quality pieces will give a similar appearance as the client’s natural hair. This includes matching color, texture, straightness, and even thickness.
The human hair used for these hair systems is the best when it goes through the least processing. However, if the hair has undergone too much treatment, it becomes brittle and fuzzy and breaks easily. This means the client would have to replace the piece more often. To avoid such instances, one should learn how to take care of their hair system properly.
Attaching the Hairpiece
This is an integral part of using a hair system. The way a client attaches the piece to their scalp will affect the hair surrounding the hairpieces and even under it. If the hairpiece isn’t attached properly, it can disrupt the client’s natural hair health.
Semi-Permanent Attached Hairpieces
These hairpieces are designed to be replaced every six weeks, and the removal and replication can only be done by a hair technician. The hair technician uses a liquid adhesive to seal the hair system onto the client’s scalp. The adhesive process is called natural bond, Polybond, or direct bonding.
This may seem favorable, but it is very unhealthy for the scalp and natural hair. This is because regular shampoos fail to remove the debris that collects under the hair system during the six weeks. This debris can include dead skin, shed hair, oils, etc.
A solution to this problem would be to loosen the hair system every five to six days to clean the scalp adequately.
Temporary Adhesive-Attached Hairpieces
This type of hair system uses double-sided tape to attach the hairpiece to the scalp. This is an easy method and can be performed by the client at home. It can also be removed and reattached at any time.
However, removing the tape leaves some residue on the scalp and hairpiece, which will need to be washed off. The tape can also become undone when exposed to extreme moisture like swimming and heavy perspiration
Clip Attachment
Clip attachment is performed by metal clips that secure the hair system to the client’s scalp by latching the natural hair. This provides a reliable attachment and is even easy to remove.
