Treatments to soften alopecia. Can hair regrow?

In order to soften and alleviate the different types of alopecia (hair loss), it is possible to combine a variety of therapies and treatments.

In particular, depending on the analysis of each clinical case, it may be possible to opt for a number of treatments that can be summarized as follows:

  • Tricologic treatment: it provides for the use of sanitary products, vials, and anti-loss lotions in the attempt to either solve already evident problems or soften the issue as much as possible. Essentially, these products aim at opposing the death of the hair follicle and to avoid its complete atrophy – since it would be impossible to attempt to stimulate hair re-growth on an already-dead hair follicle;
  • Laser treatment: it is a great remedy when combined to vials and other solutions that, when properly applied, can stimulate the activity of hair follicles;
  • Bio-Stimulating treatment: taking advantage of high frequency, this treatment stimulates the activity of hair bulbs and can therefore increase a possible hair regrowth;
  • Surgical transplant: this hair replacement system set up through surgery that takes place with general anaesthesia and carried out in specialized medical centres.

It is very difficult to answer the question as to whether lost hair can grow back.

This is why people tend to rely on non-surgical hair-thickening systems, wigs, or hair replacement systems in order to restitute freshness and youthfulness to one’s face. It is important to know that the hair’s life undergoes a cycle of regrowth that repeats itself about 20 times throughout one person’s life, consisting of three phases (birth-loss-regrowth).

Certain factors can hinder the normal cycle of regrowth and, assuming that going past the 20th cycle the hair follicles could atrophy, they would also lose their ability to grow new hair. However, oftentimes, the hair is not fully lost in certain areas of the head. Instead, it has simply become thinner and more fragile. Factors such as stress, seborrheic dermatitis, prescription drugs, hormonal and metabolic dysfunctions – besides genetic causes – can hinder the hair’s health.  It is best to intervene in a timely manner and rely upon suitable treatments rather than wait in vain.
